Review of Performance Based Standards for Level 3 and Level 4 Vehicles

The Austroads Freight Taskfoce commissioned Tiger Spider to conduct a review into the Performance Based Standards (PBS) for Levels 3 & 4 vehicles. The purpose of the project was to identify potential issues limiting uptake of these High Productivity Vehicles (HPVs) and recommend changes to the standards that would result in increased use of safer and more productive vehicles.

Use of Auxiliary Brakes in Heavy Vehicles

Tiger Spider has been engaged by the Austraods Freight Taskforce to conduct a review into the use of auxiliary brakes (Engine brakes / retarders) on heavy vehicles down steep descents. The project will incorporate data collection from stakeholder surveys in conjunction with vehicle testing and simulation studies in order to better understand the issues and develop strategies to encourage the safer operation of auxiliary brakes on very long steep descents and reduce noise in residential areas.

Mercedes-Benz Citaro Bus

PBS Design Approval and Access

Tiger Spider was engaged by Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific (MBAuP) to assist them in obtaining PBS Approval for the Citaro Bus since the Citaro is manufactured to the European overall width limit of 2.55 metres which is 0.05 metres larger than Australian prescriptive regulations permit. Tiger Spider first sought and was successful in gaining PBS Design Approval from the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR). Furthermore, Tiger Spider assisted Mercedes-Benz in preparing information to the NHVR, public transport authorities and road managers to assist them in making an access determination with respect to the Citaro.

BRE Super Quad Train & A-Frame Drawbar

Bruce Rock Engineering

Tiger Spider has engaged with Bruce Rock Engineering to provide data to Main Roads WA so that they can make an access determination with respect to a proposed 194.5 tonne 60.0 metre Super Quad Train combination (tri-axle trailers). Using the Performance Based Standards (PBS) vehicle assessment framework the proposed vehicle was compared against both the PBS standards and a prescriptive 164 tonne 50.0 metre AAB-Quad.

Putzmeister 7-Axle Concrete Pump

Performance Assessment

At the request of Main Roads WA, CPE Machinery engaged Tiger Spider to assess the performance of a 7-axle concrete pump which incorporated Putzmeister Low Speed Steer Assist (LSSA) technology. This included three steering axles in the front, two drive axles, a non-drive steerable axle and a driven steerable axle.
